Session 1
What are the objectives of estimating mortality in conflicts? Advocacy, judiciary and programmatic perspectives.

We will invite professionals from different disciplines to discuss the objectives for collecting mortality data in their respective fields of study. We will focus on 3 types of uses of mortality data: programmatic purposes, advocacy purposes and judicial purposes.

Session 2
Working with communities: approaches to collecting data in the field.

This session will cover the methods used by the different participants to collect information on mortality. Issues that will be discussed will include survey techniques, prospective surveillance, witness accounts, forensic anthropology investigations, and databases of media reports.

Using complementary methods: triangulation, meta analyses and cross-disciplinary approaches.

Session 4
Pitfalls, challenges and limitations to documenting conflict mortality.

This session will address limitations and obstacles to data collection using particular techniques in specific situations. Panel 1 will discuss statistical problems and other methodological issues intrinsic to particular methods, while panel 2 will address cultural restrictions and security issues that might compromise data quality during conflict situations.
